How a Railways exam works

The path most Railways exams follow. The notice of each exam has its own dates and stages.

  1. 1
    Notice

RRBs publish a Centralised Employment Notice (CEN) for each post group, with an indicative notice in Employment News first. Source

  2. 2
    Create an account and apply

Create an account on an RRB website with your own mobile number and email, then apply to one RRB only. Accounts from earlier RRB notices can be reused. Source

  3. 3
    Pay the fee

₹500, or ₹250 for SC, ST, ex-servicemen, PwBD, women, transgender, minorities and EBC. Most of it is refunded if you appear in the first CBT. Source

  4. 4
    Computer based tests

One or two CBTs, then a physical test (Group D), a typing test or aptitude test (some NTPC posts, ALP) where the post needs it. Source

  5. 5
    Documents and medical

Candidates equal to the vacancies are called for document verification and a railway medical exam. Zones and posts are allotted by merit and your preferences. Source

01Which exams do the Railway Recruitment Boards conduct?

The main RRB notices are NTPC (Graduate and Undergraduate posts), Level 1 posts (known as Group D), Assistant Loco Pilot, Technician, and Junior Engineer with Depot Material Superintendent and Chemical & Metallurgical Assistant. Each has its own Centralised Employment Notice (CEN), published on all RRB websites.

02Can a 10th pass candidate apply for railway jobs?

05How much is the RRB application fee, and is it refunded?

₹500 for General, OBC and EWS men, of which ₹400 is refunded if you appear in the first CBT. SC, ST, ex-servicemen, PwBD, women, transgender, minority and EBC candidates pay ₹250, refunded on appearing. Bank charges are deducted, and refunds go only to an Aadhaar-seeded bank account.

06Is there negative marking in RRB exams?
